Mustang (France, Turkey, Germany , 2015, 97min. )
Director: Deniz Gamze Ergüven
YARAT Film Club is proud to host a screening of “Mustang”.
Mustang, directed by French-turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven, has been described as the ‘Virgin Suicides in Anatolia’. The film is set in rural south-eastern Turkey and tells the story of five sisters who are raised by their conservative grandmother and uncle, who together are intent on marrying them off and protecting their honour.
Provoked by the girls frolicking on the beach, the story unfold to bring up issues of family honour, forced marriages and the demonization of female sexuality in Turkey - striking a chord too with problems faced by young Azerbaijanis.
*The screening is organized in partnership with local gender equality campaign Equals, based at ADA University. Zuma Jalilova (who teaches at the gender department at Baku State University) and Gunel Mehdiyeva (local gender expert) are to lead a discussion after the film.
The film will be shown in Turkish with English Subtitles.
